Update to: "Wisest way to harvest GEM avocados?"
Just got 6 Reed avocados in my subscription box today. Can't wait to try them! I have only heard wonderful things about these avocados!
Greg, how can I tell what kind of avocado tree I have ???
is there a JB tree profile video?
where is this?
Very cool. So mamy intriguing things about this find. Next step is to taste ripe fruit.
That's one beautiful Avocado tree. Almost looks like it's growing in its native habitat. A tree of that size should have way more fruit. Looks about as productive as my "Drone" 4 year old Fuerte.
Most excellent find, evaluation and assessment - Thank You for this !
In Uganda (East Africa) such avocados are common sight, actually most avocados i eat are not commercially grown
Nice video and amazing tree. I was surprised that you started climbing up the tree.
I mean wow. this is unbelievable
Lots of giant avocado seedlings trees up in NorCal especially in the foothills east of Sacramento Central Valley. Definitely gets lots more rainfall but they also survive without any irrigation and live through the triple digit summers without any problems
wow what an amazing find. I think seedling also based on no graft line but also it looks like it shot straight up like a seedling. Maybe girdle a branch next time you are there to see if it provokes fruit set.
Does anyone else find themselves looking for avocados trees while driving around?
Yes, I look for them in my neighborhood on walks or on drives. There aren't many in my neighborhood but there is one similar to the tree in this video. I am tempted to knock on the neighbors door to ask about the tree.
Very exciting. Tree looks very healthy.
Ya with water tree might be loaded with fruit , but who knows how good of fruit being a seedling , very cool I hope tree will never be cut down to build homes.
Unfortunately that seems to be the fate of most of the old giant avocado trees. I grew up with a huge avocado tree and my father cut it down and burned the stump to finish it off
All it needs is water and the tree would be packed with fruit.
Citrus and avocado in one hole! 🤔
Citrus and avocado staying in same hotel room. Maybe husband and wife
It's amazing how tough these are once established over the decades.
Awesome!
New Brokaw rootstock "SAN JUAN" to replace Dusa
Very cool tree, with a cool story, I wonder if pollination is affected because it’s so close to the citrus? I know my bees prefer the citrus flowers over the avocado.
First ti comment! Keep up the good work
Dang you're fast. Thanks!
Hi Greg, have you tried owari satsuma or clementine "cuties"? If so, would you still choose gold nugget? Thank you
Yes, I have. Yes, I would. While I also like Satsumas (including Owari) and the varieties sold as "Cuties," I like Gold Nuggets better.
My house had a gwen so happy it did. Great fruits
The Bacon was named not for its flavor but for James Bacon who originally cultivated this popular avocado in California in 1954. What if an avocado were called "Big Seed and Kind of Watery"? I don't mind the fibers in avocados. What I don't appreciate are the massive zones of gray flesh in supermarket avocados from overseas on sale!
After years, a Hass didn't make it. But the rootstock is growing. I told my sister it might be a Zutano, which sounds like a pretty cool tree.
The older I get, the more tempted I am to try girdling.
I read an article years ago that a small tree in general will catch up with a large tree following transplant. In other words, that $500 tree (assuming it lives) will do no better in the long run! But you do get that one fruit.
I was told that Nabal produces bad tasting fruit in Florida so it should be grown in California. I'm going to prove that concept wrong. Guatemala should be more like Florida than California.
Thanks for the video. I have some questions. The first is: Is simultaneous cross-pollination more efficient between two different verieties of avocado trees in the same field? Or can it also be done efficiently between trees of the same verieties? Which one is better? . Second: If it were better for simultaneous cross-pollination between two different verieties of avocado trees, which veriety would you prefer as the veriety that blooms simultaneously as a male and the Haas veriety as a female? Third: If we have a field with 100 trees totally, what is the appropriate number of male trees that correspond to the appropriate number of female trees or rather what is the ratio between them? What is the optimal distribution map for the distribution of those 100 trees in the field? Thank you very much in advance.
Most of those questions are answered here: gregalder.com/yardposts/cross-pollination-of-avocados-or-why-i-planted-a-hass-next-to-a-fuerte/ Also see this post: gregalder.com/yardposts/all-about-avocado-pollination/ Most avocado growers who plant pollenizers (B-type avocados) for Hass plant about 10 percent, and they do so in an arrangement such that every Hass tree has a side that is adjacent to a pollenizer tree. But not all growers do this.
At 6:08 holy moly Batman. Wow thats impressive.
great videos. I have to ask u. I have a haas avacado i grew from a seed and it got to about 2 ft in the pot and all of a sudden the leaves wilted and fell off. Now the plant is still there with a healthy trunk but no leaf growth what so ever. What can I do to promote leaf growth at this situation. Ty so much
how far apart are the trunks from each other?
That's one bold gopher
What can I do for my mango tree to produce mangoes?
Thank you, very informative, exactly what I was looking for
How does it handle cold vs the Hass
The size reminds me of an avocado trees fruit we had a s a child. We lived just down the street from Disney Land. Its still there today. I can see it on Google maps. Anyway it has nice large fruit with creamy oily flavor. I believe it was a Anaheim variety medium green color semi smooth skin. My dad would fill banana boxes and sell to nearby restaurants. It was a big tree and picking the top fruit was a challenge. Ill have to go by and grab a couple grafts from it sometime.
Not much of a killer instinct by the cat. He seemed more interested in playing with it.
My cat used to leave us presents of gopher heads, weasel heads, and rabbit heads on the steps by side door. The only time we had mice in the house is when he brought one inside to play with until it didn't move any more.
Magnificent!
#Hello #❤😊#
NiceWhere did you get your tree from?
Gophers are pretty mean. Really mean!
how do you determine the position of the gem trees as they are "facing" the bacon tree? for example, if the winds blows West to east, you place the bacon the the most west side and the gems along the East, NE, SE side?
I don't think it matters since it is flying insects that move the pollen between the trees. If you watch them work, you see bees and flies go between the trees no matter the direction, as far as my observations go. The most important factor is distance between the trees: the closer, the better.
Amen Greg, sun so important some people still dont get it.
"I'm sorry señor. I pay next week. You don't know what it like to be avocado junky, por favor señor".
Greg, where can i buy a Sharwill in San Diego? I also wonder what you know about the trees they are selling at Costco warehouse right now called Lil Cado.
I saw some Sharwils at Walter Andersen Nursery in Point Loma a couple weeks ago. Bonita Creek Nursery has also made Sharwil trees in the past. Up north, you can find them at Atkins and at Subtropica Nurseries in Fallbrook. See my post here for contact info for these places: gregalder.com/yardposts/where-to-buy-an-avocado-tree/ If the Costco trees labeled "Lil Cado" were grown by Everde (look at the tag or sticker on the container), then they are likely the variety called Wurtz. It's an old variety that originated in Encinitas, is a relatively slow-growing tree, fruits pretty well, and is decent eating.
Can I request an Anaheim tree/fruit profile? I have an Anaheim bought from lowes 5 gallon 2 years ago. Produced one last year in 15 gallon pot. Just put it in the ground. Limbs and branches seem spindly and thin
I have several varieties of avocados at home and I like Pinkerton the most. It tastes great. And it gives so much fruit for its size, especially when it's a young tree and your anxious to reap the fruit of your labor. Pinkerton grows very slow. So it is advantageous to grafted on an existing tree already, which I did over the Sir Prize which grew fast but have very little fruits.
